THE VESPA 400 WAS BUILT BY THE PIAGGIO COMPANY OUT OF FRANCE. WIDLEY KNOWN FOR THEIR SCOOTERS, THE VESPA 400 WAS THEIR ONLY ATTEMPT AT AN AUTOMOBILE AND IT LASTED FOR 4 YEARS WITH A TOTAL PRODUCTION OF ABOUT 34,000. THE COMPANY SIMPLY COULDN'T COMPETE AGAINST THE OTHER MANUFACTURES IN THE SAME MARKET. THE DESIGN WAS UNIQUE WITH THE PUSH BACK CANVAS TOP AND SUICIDE DOORS. THE FRONT GRILL SLID OUT AS A BATTERY TRAY, MAKING IT THE EASIEST CAR BUILT FOR BATTERY SERVICE! THE VESPA USED A 2 STROKE 2 CYL 393cc ENGINE THAT WAS CAPIBLE TO PUSH THE 2 SEATER CONVERTIBLE TO SPEEDS OF 55MPH. AN OPTIONAL CUSION WAS AVALIABLE FOR 2 VERY SMALL REAR PASSANGERS. FOR THE US, THE CARS WERE IMPORTED TO A VESPA SCOOTER DEALER IN COLORADO FOR RESALE. VERY FEW OF THESE CARS EVER MADE IT INTO THE USA.
